Phonics teaching at KAPS

At Kirkby Avenue Primary School, we value the importance of phonics as the prime approach to teaching decoding skills. It is essential that our approach to teaching phonics and reading is accessible to all learners, regardless of age and background. We teach phonics through a scheme called Read Write Inc. (RWI). This ensures that in school we have a consistent method of teaching children to decode and encode words which enable them to read, spell and write. Our Phonics lessons are fast pace and engaging, but not distracting. Children are aware of the consistent routines and structure of a phonics lesson and they are aware of the expectations at each point in the lesson with repetitive and rewarding activities, which help secure prior learning and develop new learning.

All children in Reception and Year 1 have a daily phonics lesson. This continues in Year 2 or beyond if children are needing support with their Phonics and reading. In Nursery, we begin by teaching 2 or 3 set one sounds per week and 2 or three listening skills lessons to our children when they are ready to begin the Read, Write, Inc. scheme.
Alongside teaching phonics there are many other opportunities for reading throughout the phonics session and in the curriculum.
