SUMMER TERM!
Our topic for this term is 'Seasides, Oceans and Continents'.
We practise our essential English and Maths skills everyday in a number of ways! We independently work on our individual targets each morning as we come in to school, and complete daily sessions for phonics, spelling, handwriting and Mastering Number
In Maths lessons, we will be looking at different measures. We will be learning how to tell the time on an analogue clock, as well as measuring length and height in centimetres as well as mass and weight, and capacity and volume. We will also be looking at new ways to use our place value knowledge of tens and ones to calculate addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems.
Can you order the heights of the people in your family? Who is the shortest / tallest? What can you use at home to measure weights?
In English, we are doing lots of things to improve our writing. We do handwriting practise every single day, focusing on our letter formation to get ready for joined up writing in Key Stage 2. We do lots of phonics, including extra phonics practise sessions in the afternoons to make sure we are confident with our sounds and reading different types of words. In our English lessons, we will be looking at different types of text and practising our grammar skills, making sure to include the correct punctuation in our sentences.
Can you write a sentence including a noun, a verb and an adjective? Can you name one of the four types of sentence we use in our writing?
In Science, we are learning about plants. We will be thinking about seeds and bulbs, comparing their similarities and differences, as well as identifying the different parts of plants and trees and understanding what their role is. We will be trying to identify different types of common flowers and trees and knowing their names.
Can you identify a dandelion / daisy / rose? Do you know what a holly tree looks like?
In Geography, we will be learning about different people and their communities around the world, before turning our attention to the seaside in Summer 2 in preparation for our exciting trip to Cleethorpes! We will compare different environments and learn about key features of the seaside.
What types of features will we see at the seaside? Do you know anybody who lives in another part of the world?
In Computing, we will be looking at how to use the Microsoft Word software to type up letters, reports and homework. We will find out how to add text, and then edit its appearance including how to change the font, the size and the colour, as well as how to save and retrieve work. We will also be doing lots of work on internet safety and looking at how to keep ourselves and our personal information safe online.
What other things might you be able to use Microsoft Word to type up? What ways do you know already to keep yourself safe online?
In Art, we will be finding out about the artist Alfred Wallis, and looking at some examples of his paintings. Alfred taught himself to paint at 70 years old after his wife died, and used lots of scrap and recycled materials for his work. We will be looking at some of the features of the seaside such as the coastline, harbours, piers and lighthouses and attempting to make our own version of Alfred's paintings.

In Religious Education, we will be finding out about different religions and what their views say about our wonderful world.
What do you believe about our wonderful world? Do you think everybody has the same opinion?
In PSHCE, our topics will be 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me'. For our 'Relationships' topic, we will be thinking about the relationships we have with family members, friends, and other trusted people in our lives, as well as thinking about trusted people in the community who may help us, such as police, doctors, nurses and shopkeepers. We will discuss the differences between these types of relationship and look at how we can celebrate them appropriately. In 'Changing Me', we will be looking at how our bodies change physically as we grow up, as well as thinking about other changes as we get old, such as moving classes, to prepare us for our transition to our new classes next year.

Homework
At our school, homework is set in the form of a 'menu'. This will have a range of activities to give you choice and flexibility, e.g. you can choose more creative activities on quieter weekends when you have more time. One task should be completed from the menu each week.
In Holly class, homework will be set on a Friday, and is due back by the following Wednesday.

Our PE days
Holly class PE day is usually on a Monday. We also do PE on Wednesday afternoon for Creative Curriculum. On PE days, please come to school in your PE kit - a white or blue plain t-shirt, black or navy blue shorts, joggers or leggings, and sensible black trainers.
Children should have earrings removed in advance, and long hair should be tied back for safety.
Remarkable Readers
At Kirkby Avenue Primary School, we believe reading to be extremely important. Reading underpins so many other areas of the curriculum and supports the children in developing their imagination. To support your child with their reading, we ask that you listen to them read at home as often as possible and record this in their ‘Reading Record’.
Our Reading recognition system, Remarkable Readers, aims to ensure that all our children are remarkable with their Reading throughout the year. Each time a child reads they achieve a ‘Reading Point’. Depending on age, this could be:
- Reading at home to an adult
- In school independently
- At home independently
Reading Points are cumulative and will be added up weekly throughout the year.
